Abstract: This paper expounds the latest advance of research on continental margin evolution and discusses the model of pure shearing and simple shearing on continental lithosphere extension and new conceptions of paired passive continental margin. The deep tectonic setting of formation and evolution on the volcanic passive continental margin and the underplating of magmatic activity during extension are discussed. The significance of extended transitional crust on the research of intercontinenta1 foldbelt evolution is emphasized.
